NIH GASTROENTEROLOGY TRAINING GRANT
APPLICANT AND MENTOR INFORMATION

 

Criteria of eligibility:
1. Degree - MD, Ph.D., D.V.M. or equivalent
2. US Citizenship or Permanent Resident

Spectrum of Research: Any type of research can be included - basic, translational, and outcomes research, and career development.


The following information is needed for review by the Training Grant Committee before applicants will be considered for a position.

  1. Applicant's CV and a personal statement about academic goals.

  2. Name of applicant's mentor, a letter of recommendation from the mentor, and a 2-4 page NIH style biosketch of the mentor. The letter should include details of the support, training, and mentoring to be provided to the applicant. Mentors should be individuals within the UCLA Affiliated Programs, CURE, or the VA system, who can help and advise the applicant. Mentors must be researchers who (a) are currently funded to do research, (b) are actually doing research, and (c) will be on site at the time of the applicant's proposed training.

  3. A detailed research plan and project in NIH format. It should not exceed 5 pages, and it should be hypothesis driven. The research proposal should include introduction, background and significance, specific aims, hypotheses, methods, and plan for data collection and analyses.

  4. A detailed plan for career development including course work, mentoring, and technical training. This should be written jointly by the applicant and mentor. (Please limit plan to 2 pages.) Persons applying as outcomes researchers should consider enrolling in a masters program at UCLA or Rand (MPH or MSHS), and give details of courses and a timetable for completing them. Those in laboratory or translation research should consider enrollment in a Ph.D. program, although these are not mandatory.

  5. If the applicant is in the Division of Digestive Diseases, Department of Medicine, two additional letters of recommendation are requested from other local faculty who are currently working with the applicant or have worked with the applicant in the past.

  6. If the applicant is outside of the Division of Digestive Diseases, and Department of Medicine (such as in Physiology, Pediatrics, or Surgery), he/she should obtain letters of recommendation from two senior faculty members of applicant's department, including one from their Division Chief (or Dept. Chair). These letters must detail the commitment of the parent department (e.g. Pediatrics) and division (e.g. Pediatric Gastroenterology) to the applicant's career development and research.
