Dr. Middlekauff
graduated from Yale University in 1982 with a B.S. in Biochemistry
and received her M.D. from USC School of Medicine in 1986. She continued
her training at the UCLA Center for Health Sciences in Internal
Medicine and Cardiology and served as Chief Resident in Medicine.
In 1992, she joined the UCLA Department of Medicine faculty in the
Division of Cardiology. One of her research interests is the effect
of acupuncture on the sympathetic nervous system (nerves that carry
adrenaline) in patients with heart failure. Heart failure patients
with overactivity of the sympathetic nerves are at increased risk
of dying. Pharmacological therapies targeted at interrupting this
sympathetic activation have been shown to improve survival in patients
with heart failure. Acupuncture may provide a complementary means
of curbing this sympathetic nerve overactivity in heart failure.
