Dr. Mandelkern has directed the VAGLA PET Center since its founding. He is active in clinical practice and biomedical-imaging research at VAGLAHS, and in imaging, basic physics and statistics research at UC Irvine.

Research: Dr. Mandelkern's human-study research includes PET/MRI and EEG studies of normal brain function, substance abuse, visceral and somatic pain syndromes, epilepsy, dementias, cancer and peripheral perfusion. He works on methods for small-animal autoradiography. His non-biomedical research is in experimental elementary particle physics and statistical interval estimation.
